Mdundo, Africa’s leading music distribution platform, has disbursed $1 million in royalties to over 300,000 artists as of July 2025, marking a significant milestone in supporting the continent’s creative economy.
The platform, operating in markets such as Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Cameroon, Tanzania, Ghana, Uganda, Zambia, Malawi, Rwanda, and Mozambique, announced the achievement on Thursday. The payouts reflect Mdundo’s commitment to transparent and accessible royalty systems, enabling artists to earn from a growing user base of 39 million monthly active users.
Strategic partnerships with telecom giants like Safaricom, Airtel, MTN, Glo, and Vodacom, alongside brands such as Serengeti Breweries, Kenya Breweries, NCBA Bank, Samsung, and DKT, have expanded access to legal music streaming while ensuring fair compensation for creators. Mdundo’s focus on hyperlocal content, bolstered by licensing deals with labels like EmPawa Africa, Chocolate City, Dvpper Music, Sol Generation, and Swangz Avenue, has built a culturally resonant catalog that drives artist monetization.
The platform’s expansion into Southern Africa and Cameroon further broadens revenue opportunities for creators. Looking forward, Mdundo projects distributing $1.2 million in royalties by 2026, supported by anticipated revenues of $1.7 million to $2.2 million. Growth strategies include enhanced subscription services, deeper telecom integrations, and leveraging its Progressive Web App for global reach.
